Thinking
Ideas, interpretation, memory, imagination and the stories we make about experience.
Thinking, seen from different perspectives.
Begin with what White — Thinking means within PentOme, then explore its connections with the natural world, related ideas and published research. Each perspective is kept distinct, so connections can be explored without treating them as the same thing.
White represents Thinking within PentOme: the words, ideas, memories, interpretations and imagined possibilities through which we make sense of experience.
Thinking can clarify what is happening, but it can also rehearse, predict, compare, rationalise and tell stories. PentOme therefore treats a thought as something worth noticing rather than automatically treating it as the whole truth.
The useful question is not simply ‘What am I thinking?’ but also ‘How is this way of thinking relating to what I am feeling, sensing, wanting and actually doing?’
- Interpretation — the meaning we give an event.
- Memory — what past experience brings into the present.
- Imagination — what we picture might happen next.
- Perspective — the frame through which we are currently looking.
